In Cool Hand Luke, the film starts with the word, VIOLATION, over the screen. The word is from a stopping meter and establishes the pace for the whole film. Luke Jackson, the title character, is captured for cutting off the leaders of the town’s stopping meters while alcoholic, or in legitimate terms, for pulverizing civil property while under the impact of liquor.
